Friday, May 9th

The Night Hawks in the CityBar at 9pm; $15

Over the last 30 years, The Nighthawks have earned a reputation as one of the best and hardest working bands around. They have gotten their widest acclaim for being one of the first and best white boy blues bands of their generation, and for putting on a great live show. But their acclaim and accomplishments go far beyond that.

They are among the top musical acts to come out of the Washington, D.C. area, and are still based there.

They played as the opening act or backing band for such legendary blues artists as Muddy Waters, Otis Rush, Big Walter Horton and Elvin Bishop. They also played in the Rosebud Agency’s blues all-star tours with Pinetop Perkins, John Hammond, Charlie Musselwhite and John Lee Hooker. Some of the guitarists who have played with the band over the years include Bob Margolin, Steuart Smith, Warren Haynes, Jim Solbery, Pete Kennedy, Phil Petroff and Ratso (Jim Silman).

Saturday, May 10th

GroovaScape in the CityBar at 9pm; $5

Every band is a formula, a choice listing of people specific ingredients that, when put under the pressure of a performance, create a distinct vision that can be like no other. Groova Scape is just one such vision.

This Week at 202 Market

Here’s what’s happening this week at 202.

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Scythian (Citybar) from 9pm - 2am, cover $5

Scythian started several years ago as nothing more than a group of street performers. Raised playing classical music, necessity drove Scythian (pronounced sith-ee-yin) to play at street corners in hopes of earning a few bucks for gas money. Although the need for petrol got Scythian started, it was the great times they had and the appreciative listeners they met that kept them going. It was through the encouragement of these friends that Scythian became a full fledged band and we thank you.

Brett Harris (Citybar) from 9pm - 12:30am

Brett Harris has come a long way from his days singing into a hand-me-down tape recorder in his basement. Last year, the Durham singer-songwriter emerged from that basement with a collection of songs and began playing shows throughout the region. With Yesterday’s News, his self- released first EP, Brett merges a unique vocal style and vintage influences to craft songs that are both infectious and soulful. Brett recorded the EP at Overdub Lane Studios under the direction of producer/engineer John Plymale in only a few days, playing every instrument himself. The EP proves Brett’s versatility as a musician as well as a songwriter. From the Paul McCartney-inspired, whimsical charm of “Cream with Coffee” to the aching melody of “Tennessee Line,” each song is distinctive yet familiar. If you listen to Brett Harris’ music, beware: You will be humming for days. “…[Brett's] on stage charisma matches the enjoyable intelligence of his music.” -Edwin Arnaudin, The Daily Tar Heel

Pnuma Trio (Loft) from 9pm - 1:30am, $12.00 cover

Try this story on for size: three upstarts in Memphis use their classical and jazz training to hammer out beat-driven compositions encompassing the funkiness of the jam scene and the mind-bending progressions of electronica. The young bucks known as Pnuma Trio instantly find themselves in high demand, playing nearly two hundred dates in 2006 alone. The trio bangs out scene-stealing festival plays at Langerado and Camp Bisco, gets tapped to provide support for such artists as Buckethead, The Disco Biscuits, and Michael Franti and Spearhead, and fills up clubs and small theatres that most bands reach only after years of toil. Just for style points, they finish up the year with a barn-storming, sold-out tour of Japan including a massive set at the world-famous Nagisa Festival.

Thursday, April 24th -

DJ Dance in the Loft (Loft) from 9pm - 1:30am

New Day is also getting played extensively on dozens of college and Internet radio stations like AccuRadio.com and Live365.com, as well as XM Satellite Radio. Voted Reno’s best band from 2005-2007 by readers of the Reno Gazette-Journal and 2006-2007 by the Reno News & Review.

Friday, April 25th -

Sam Kininger with Drew de Four (CityBar) from 9pm - 12am, $10 cover

A saxophone legend, Berklee alum, and all-around funk genius, Sam Kininger is building his fan-base and repertoire simultaneously at clubs across the country. Kininger has been in legendary funk/soul groups since the beginning, including, but not limited to Lettuce, Soulive and the Brotherhood of Groove. He has also performed with larger pop acts including Dave Matthews and Wyclef Jean.

As a solo artist Sam Kininger has developed a distinctive, organic sound on the saxophone that is strongly expressive. He consistently demonstrates his technical dexterity and rhythmic precision while maintaining an honest and innovative exploration of musical improvisation.

U-Melt (Banquet Room) from 9pm - 12am

Although U-Melt can fall into the jamband genre, to sum them up so succinctly oversimplifies their complexity. By design, U-Melt transcends the jamband label. What it does is unify all these bands with different styles into a scene based around one thing: improvisation, says Salzer. As Lasher explains, to say a band is a jamband doesn’t really describe the sound. I think it describes a philosophy about performance rather than a sound, and it’s definitely a philosophy to which we subscribe. After parsing through the many various ways to describe U-Melt’s sound and vision, Lasher sums it up best, There’s jambands that are rock bands, jambands that are jazz bands, jambands that are funk bands, jambands that are trance bands, . . . and we’re none of those, but then again, at times we’re all of those.

A Chef’s Tasting Pictorial.

There are a lot of foods that are a challenge for me to eat, and certain foods that I simply don’t like or would never consider eating - like foie grois for example. However, 202 Market always brings out the adventurer in me. The chefs there have an amazing talent for making my most feared foods taste good. Here’s a look at the current tasting menu by Chef Chad Scott. This menu was particularly challenging for me because I’m a) not overly fond of fish, b) the thought of eating the liver of anything makes my stomach turn, and c) I have never liked goat cheese.

The goat cheese apple soup was fantastic. I could eat it all day. My husband and I sipped ours out a cute little cup and relished the flavor. Maybe goat cheese isn’t so bad after all. I really dug it in this dish. Adam thinks it’s the texture of the cheese I’m ordinarily not fond of. Melted into soup it’s transformed into something wonderful.

I’ve never been a big fan of fish. I enjoy tuna and will tolerate salmon. However, this BBQ Snapper was wonderful and very steak-like. It came with a bit of smoked bibb lettuce and sorbet. It was fun pulling off the “lid.”

I was a bit apprehensive about the Foie Gras. I shouldn’t have been. While the texture was a bit strange, sort of scrapple like, the flavor was impeccable. I mixed everything on the plate together and delighted in the individual flavors all melding into one.

Next up was the paella. This is the only dish I’ve ever had at 202 that I didn’t like. However, it wasn’t because it wasn’t good. My husband loved it. I am not at all a fan of Mexican food, and the thought of eating a mussel turned my stomach. I mean, it looked like a muscle. I did try it, but it was a no go. However, it is not something I would eat anywhere regardless of who makes it. I just picked out the shrimp and chicken and sausage and a bit of scallop and ate that, leaving the rest.

Well, Mr. Manager wasn’t at all happy with my discontent over the paella. He very happily brought me the Steak Wagu so “I wouldn’t go hungry.” I loved it!

Finally, we finished off the dinner with a Creamsicle-Ginger Float. It was both fun to eat and delicious.

The next time you stop in 202 why not give the Chef’s Tasting a try? You get to sample a little of everything rather than having to choose just one or two items from the menu, and you leave with your stomach full and content!

For dinner reservations please call 540.343.6644 Monday-Sunday beginning at 11am. They’re located at 202 Market Square in downtown Roanoke.

good music and good eats.

202 Market is now serving lunch. Their awnings haven’t made their grand entrance yet, but I’m told it’s only a matter of days before they’ll be in place for outdoor dining. In the meantime you can still enjoy a tapas style lunch in the form of an all you can eat buffet for $12. Lunch is served from 11:30am to 1:30pm and is of course cooked up by 202’s extraordinary Executive Chef Chad Scott.

Speaking of 202, the City Elixir that was held at 202 on Tuesday was fabulous. While the service was unfortunately somewhat lacking - our server was new and I’m thinking more than a little overwhelmed amidst the chaos and influx of people - the food was, as always, excellent. 202 Market simply has a knack for consistency where the quality of their cuisine is concerned.

The Ministers of Soul, a local band that plays great soul tunes, played Tuesday night as the main music act. They were very good and really blew me away. I would recommend hearing them play if you ever have the chance. I was also able to enjoy music from students of the Downtown Music Lab. The Downtown Music Lab is a non-profit that offers after school music lessons for kids in grades 6 - 12. The $10 donation everyone made at the door was donated to the Music Lab.

I’ll be back at 202 on Friday to hear Chris Duarte play. He’s another incredible musician. We heard him several months ago at 202 for the first time and he was so good we’re going back. He plays a really mean guitar, has a fantastic voice, and some really great songs that are a mix of blues and rock. Though he did play one song I loved called Los Angeles that strayed from his usual style. It sort of sounded like Cake on acid, and I mean that as the highest sort of compliment. Unfortunately the song isn’t on any of his CDs yet. Anyway, I’m going with both Adam (husband), Cody (son), and Jake and Lisa (friends.) Cody will be having his last big hooray before school starts on Tuesday, and we’ll also be celebrating Jake’s new job. If you can’t get into 202 - last time there was standing room only before all was said and done - swing by anyway and stand outside for a listen. You’ll be able to hear Chris playing through the glass. ;)

try a taste.

I had my second ever go at the Chef’s Tasting Menu at 202 Market on Friday night. Chef Chad Scott had just changed all five menu items and we were the first to give it a try. This time my son, Cody who’s ten, was also along for the culinary experience. I have to say I was incredibly pleased with the new offerings. Every dish was wonderful, and the Tasting Menu now lists the wines available with each course should you choose the optional wine pairing.

Our dinner started with a complimentary amuse-bouche, or “mouth amusement.” Our one bite teaser was referred to as green eggs and ham - a tiny bit of egg with a green pesto sauce and a slice of ham delicately arranged on a saucer. Cody loved it! We all did in fact, but Cody refused to drink any tea after this sampling for fear of losing the delicious flavor still lingering in his mouth.

The first course of the tasting was the Hamachi Tartare with summer melon and wasabi granita. It was very good. My first experience with tartare was 202’s Tuna Tartare during my first tasting experience and I fell in love with it. Normally not a fan of fish, this is one dish I would go back for even if it isn’t technically cooked. (It took me a while to get over that little detail.) Right now you’ll find the Big Eye Tuna Tartare & Crudo on 202 Market’s menu under the starters. As for the Hamachi Tartare, you’ll have to go with tasting menu to give it a try. However, if you like to cook, you also have the option trying these recipes for Tuna Tartare and Hamachi Tartare.

The second course was a Seared Scallop with mango, prosciutto, passion fruit, and about ten other compatible flavors. This dish was just amazing. I ate the scallop with a slice of mango and prosciutto smeared in the different sauces that artfully splattered the plate. Cody and I’s favorite sauce was the banana, while Adam - my husband - preferred the other offerings which included pesto, ketchup and passion fruit. Normally, I am not a big fan of scallops, but I ate this one with gusto. It’s no wonder 202 Market is now touting they have the best scallops in Roanoke.

The third course was Bacon and Eggs - sous vide egg with parmigian cheese biscuit, smoked bacon, and truffle suds. The egg, which is basically very slowly poached using a vacuum-bag technique, comes whole so it almost looks like a hard boiled egg, but with a much different texture. While this dish was also a tasty addition to the meal, it was probably my least favorite, but mostly because I just don’t like egg yolk.

Beef was next on the menu. Delicious and oh so tender it was served with smoked yukon gold potatoes and nicoise vegetables. Everything about this dish was incredible, and despite the beef being cooked medium - I’m generally a well done kind of girl - I had no complaints about this dish that I’d describe as nothing less than perfect.

Last, but surely not least, was dessert which consisted of Tahitian Vanilla Panna Cotta, blackberry caramel, and progressive flavors and textures. Basically Adam and I were served a mini coffee flavored milkshake with a vanilla liquor - Cody had to skip out on this part of the dish - and a plate of panna cotta with chocolate, caramel, and other yummy flavors perfect for pleasing your sweet tooth.

In the end I was not at all disappointed with this tasting, and I highly recommend you give the Chef’s Tasting Menu a try for yourself. Even Cody loved it. So much in fact he let the Chef know that he was even better than Top Chef - he and Adam often watch this show together - and the Chef in return let Cody know how cool he thought he was for actually giving the tasting menu a go rather than insisting on a fast food cheeseburger. The Tasting Menu, by the way, is $58 a person for parties of two or more, entire tables only. You can tack on the wine pairing for an additional $22.

In addition to the new Tasting Menu, 202 Market has made several other changes as well. Every Sunday night at 8pm you can listen to live jazz by local musician Cyrus Pace. He’s very talented and always pleasing to hear. Cyrus, who is also the brother of 202 Market’s assistant manager James, is also the new sound manager for the restaurant.

Furthermore, the stage wall at 202 now boasts fun facts about the current staff before the band takes the stage so you can learn all about who’s who with fun facts. For example, server Alyssa is an avid gamer and a huge fan of Mario Kart, while the General Manager used to know Elvis. Also, 202 Market is now offering 202 Market Trivia every Tuesday night starting at 9pm.

If you’ve been downtown recently you may have also noticed the new tables outside of 202 Market for outdoor dining. I’m also told that lunch will be the new thing beginning in August. Something along the lines of ten offerings for ten dollars in ten minutes. I can’t wait to try lunch there, though I’m also keen on trying the Mushroom Tempura that recently made its way onto their menu.

Should you need any more reason to visit 202, just last week the Roanoke Times gave this fine dining establishment a 5-star review - the highest praise they offer.

To learn more about Chef Chad Scott, be sure to pick up a free copy of this month’s issue of Bella Magazine. Downtown you can easily find an issue in both Good Things on the Market and Little Dipper.

Digg It.
