Cash Crash Lunch

Metro! announced in their newsletter today that they will be offering daily “Cash Crash Lunches.”

In these trying economic times, we know that even enjoying a good lunch can be difficult. In that spirit, we’d like to invite you to join us for our daily “Cash Crunch Lunch” specials. We feature a daily $7 lunch special, such as our grilled prime sirloin salad with buttermilk dressing and golden pommes frittes. We’ve also added an heirloom tomato BLT to our hugely successful $6 sandwich menu, compliments of farmer Tim Belcher from Rolling Meadows Farms on the City Market.

You may also be interested in their Sunday early dinner specials where you can enjoy a 3-course European-style boutique dinner from 5-7pm for $20. Or try out their new Fresh Shots menu which contains freshly juiced fruits mixed with Absolut vodka. These drinks are refreshing without being sugary and sweet. They have seven flavors to choose from: Blueberry-Watermelon, Strawberry-Orange, Citrus Orange-Lemon-Lime, Blackberry-Lemon, Bing cherry-Orange, Cucumber-Ginger, and
Cantaloupe.

Saturday Shopping Spectacular

There were so many beautiful things to see on Saturday at the Roanoke City Market I went a little overboard with the pictures. Hopefully your internet service can handle all the photos I want to share with you.

From the Farmers

Rolling Meadows Farms had loads of beautiful daisies for sale.

They were available in a number of different colors.

Tim also had flowers in what he calls his Virgina Tech colors. These flowers came in burgundy and peach.

He also carries a wide assortment of succulents.

Julia Light had fresh cut flowers for sale alongside iris bulbs and hyacinth bushes ready for planting.

Scott sold beautiful wreaths made from dried flowers.

Walter’s Greenhouse offered a huge assortment of plants including this interesting yellow flower that just says “Wow!”

I also thought this pink trailing flower was beautiful.

Riverside Nursery had some neat looking ageratums ready to plant.

John was also selling this beauty.

Jack Ferguson was selling fresh eggs and kale.

There were also delicious cuts of pork from Sandy River Pork.

From the Crafters

Dana James was selling butterfly and dragonfly sun catchers made from fused glass.

Ben Crooks had his usual assortment of rocks, minerals and fossils on hand.

Linda brought her beautiful sea glass jewelry down to sell.

While Little Creek Forge was selling key chains of the state flower, the dogwood.

Penny Lane had more of her wonderful fungi jewelry for sale.

And Steve of Little Blue Woman Candles brought these tea light candle holders to lure potential customers.

Sherry was selling unique, hand thrown vases.

And pots.

Anne brought more of her jewelry down to the Market. I especially like this piece as the stones remind me of acorns.

This pendant also grabbed my attention.

Kari was selling her hand painted, tin wall vases along with an assortment of fun birdhouses and mirrors.

Kyle and Dave were selling their party platters. I thought this blue platter really stood out.

Rebecca’s Soap Delicatessen brought out her new Juicy Grapefruit soap and lotion for a perfectly pampered you.

And Cheryl had a new one of a kind journal for sale.

From the Shops

Okay, so I didn’t really get to focus much on the shops along Market St, but here are a few things I did find. If you’re interested in seeing more from the Market Street shops, please let me know.

Baking dishes on sale at Ladles and Linens.

Yard art from Good Things on the Market.

And a cat shaped watering can from The Gift Niche.

No-smoking policy at Metro!

Metro! initiated a no-smoking policy today. From their newsletter:

As of April 1st, Metro! will initiate a no-smoking policy at the main bar and lounge until 10 pm. The dining room will remain, as always, non-smoking at all times. This new policy will address our customers’ primary concern of smoke interfering with the fine dining atmosphere and the cuisine. We hope this is a good first step towards making Metro! completely smoke-free.

We have come to this decision after careful consideration of both the opinions of our customers and the well-being of our staff. We believe that with your support, we can improve both our business and our atmosphere while continuing to offer the exquisite dining and entertainment experience you have come to expect from Metro! If this policy decision proves successful, we will go forward with a fully non-smoking policy in the coming months.

Thank you so much for your consideration as we strive to meet all of our guests’ needs as hospitably and as ethically as we can.

To encourage our customers to support our new policy, we have created a new Metro! Sushi Hour, 7 days a week from 6-7 pm - half-price all sushi menu items, no strings attached!! Check out Chef Switzer’s new spring menu specials, great to enjoy on our outdoor patio. Remember, this Sunday we will be open featuring full menu items as well as our much anticipated Sunday brunch specials. Selections such as traditional eggs benedict, eggs Chesapeake feat our famous crab cakes, and prime rib with truffled eggs are sure to be hits.

A Chef’s Tasting Pictorial.

There are a lot of foods that are a challenge for me to eat, and certain foods that I simply don’t like or would never consider eating - like foie grois for example. However, 202 Market always brings out the adventurer in me. The chefs there have an amazing talent for making my most feared foods taste good. Here’s a look at the current tasting menu by Chef Chad Scott. This menu was particularly challenging for me because I’m a) not overly fond of fish, b) the thought of eating the liver of anything makes my stomach turn, and c) I have never liked goat cheese.

The goat cheese apple soup was fantastic. I could eat it all day. My husband and I sipped ours out a cute little cup and relished the flavor. Maybe goat cheese isn’t so bad after all. I really dug it in this dish. Adam thinks it’s the texture of the cheese I’m ordinarily not fond of. Melted into soup it’s transformed into something wonderful.

I’ve never been a big fan of fish. I enjoy tuna and will tolerate salmon. However, this BBQ Snapper was wonderful and very steak-like. It came with a bit of smoked bibb lettuce and sorbet. It was fun pulling off the “lid.”

I was a bit apprehensive about the Foie Gras. I shouldn’t have been. While the texture was a bit strange, sort of scrapple like, the flavor was impeccable. I mixed everything on the plate together and delighted in the individual flavors all melding into one.

Next up was the paella. This is the only dish I’ve ever had at 202 that I didn’t like. However, it wasn’t because it wasn’t good. My husband loved it. I am not at all a fan of Mexican food, and the thought of eating a mussel turned my stomach. I mean, it looked like a muscle. I did try it, but it was a no go. However, it is not something I would eat anywhere regardless of who makes it. I just picked out the shrimp and chicken and sausage and a bit of scallop and ate that, leaving the rest.

Well, Mr. Manager wasn’t at all happy with my discontent over the paella. He very happily brought me the Steak Wagu so “I wouldn’t go hungry.” I loved it!

Finally, we finished off the dinner with a Creamsicle-Ginger Float. It was both fun to eat and delicious.

The next time you stop in 202 why not give the Chef’s Tasting a try? You get to sample a little of everything rather than having to choose just one or two items from the menu, and you leave with your stomach full and content!

For dinner reservations please call 540.343.6644 Monday-Sunday beginning at 11am. They’re located at 202 Market Square in downtown Roanoke.
